Mrs. Phoebe (Gilbert) English obituary

Rites Held For Mrs. English

     Mrs. Phoebe English passed away at the Faxton Hospital at Utica Oct. 4, 1962 where she had been a patient for about one week.
     Mrs. English was born Dec. 23, 1869, the daughter of Ephriam and Nancy Thomas Gilbert, at Jefferson. She was married to Addison English and was the mother of three daughters and six sons.
     In 1912 they moved from the town of Jefferson to the town of Fulton. They lived at Rossman Hill, West Butler and Vintonton. In 1943 Mr. English died and Mrs. English continued to reside at Vintonton until ten years ago when she went to Oriskany Falls to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Shaw.
     She was the eldest member of the West Fulton church.
     Funeral services were held at the West Fulton Methodist church Saturday afternoon with Rev. George Swart of Sharon Springs officiating and assisted by Rev. Harold Galloway of Summit. Rev. Swart used Proverbs 31:28A as his text and also spoke of the many changes in the past 93 years, but mother's love never changes.
     She will be remembered as a kind, cheerful and helpful neighbor and will be missed by all her old friends and neighbors.
     Mrs. English as survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mabel Shaw of Oriskany Falls; six sons, Calvin of Ilion, Archie of Inlet, Wallace of West Fulton, Clyde of Oriskany Falls, Clayton of Schenectady and Leon of Vintonton; also, 14 grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Burial was made in the Jefferson cemetery. The pall bearers were William Tingue, Harold MacNeil, Harry Noxon, Sanford and Orrin Fancher and Harry Clapper.
