Five Jacob Bests of Schoharie County

15 March 2004

Press Release for Immediate Publication

Jim Churchyard, a Fallbrook resident since 1996, has published an article in the current issue of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. The title of the article is "Those Five Jacob Bests: Loyalists or Patriots?". Jim has been researching his family history for over forty years and has published several earlier articles showing solutions to puzzles that have baffled others. In this article he examines the confusing records about five close relatives with the same name in upstate New York who appear on rosters of both sides during the American Revolution. He identifies two Jacob Bests as loyalists (Tories), two as patriots and one as too young to have served on either side. The Best family sprang from German immigrants who migrated to New York in 1709.

The Record is a prestigious genealogical magazine with well over a hundred years of publication. Most genealogical libraries subscribe to it. Jim is a member of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, the organization in New York City that publishes the Record. He is also a member of the Escondido Genealogical Society and several lineage organizations.

Jim is a semi-retired applied mathematician, computer programmer and technical writer. He has been a rocket scientist at White Sands Missile Range, a simulation analyst in Orange County and, most recently, a statistician at the Naval Weapons Station. In addition to genealogical articles he published several technical articles on rocket guidance, cam design and error analysis. He has degrees from the University of Arizona (Tucson) in mathematics, English and education.
