There is no sign marking the name of this cemetery. It is located in East Cobleskill at 3706 Route 145 next to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. It is easily visible from the road. Although it is maintained nicely and effort has been taken to keep it in good condition, many of the stones have been broken so they are difficult to read. Mara Kugler

Note 1 (August 13, 2007)
I recently had the joy and privilege of visiting Schoharie County and Casper Cemetery. If you had not posted this cemetery online I probably never would have known where to find it.

One of the entries, Sally Wilsey, has a “5? days” in the age of death. This is in fact correct, the age of death, 78 yrs 5 mos 5 days, corresponds exactly to her birth date, October 7, 1798 (ref. Vital Records, Middleburgh Reformed Church.)

Her husband, John Hoose, has a stone much harder to read, but I was able to read the death date as June 9, 1887 (I couldn’t read his age at death). This makes sense because he was enumerated with his daughter Catherine (but not wife Sally) in the 1880 U.S. Census. Also, I carefully traced the year with a pencil lead and it appeared to be 1887; and, a photo of the headstone actually brought it out better than what I could see with my naked eye. His birth date was March 19, 1793, so his age at death was probably 94 yrs 2 mos 21 days, something worth rechecking on my next trip.

The only puzzler is the birth year for their daughter, Catherine Hoose, which clearly reads 1868, yet her actual birth year was 1838. A stonecutter error?

John Hoose and Sally Wilsey were my 3rd great-grandparents.

Another set of ancestors (2nd great-grandparents) in Casper Cemetery are William and Anna H. Eckerson, no problems there. FYI, Anna H. was daughter of John and Sally Hoose. Her actual death date was December 31, 1904 in Cobleskill, and her death record says she was buried in East Cobleskill. William’s death record says “Caspers” for the burial spot. Again, these sites were a mystery to me, and would have remained so if you hadn’t posted this cemetery at the Schoharie web site. Thanks a million for the help! Ed
