Alexander Cook obituary
Waukesha Freeman (Waukesha, WI) - May 10, 1917

Alex Cook, Early Lawyer

Alexander Cook, one of the pioneer lawyers of Waukesha county, was born in Sharon Springs, Schoharie county, N. Y., March 1, 1820, and after completing his literary education at Hamilton College, he read law in the city of Syracuse, and was admitted to the Bar in 1843, coming to Waukesha in 1845. He was district attorney of the county eight terms before 1880, and was elected again in 1891, holding office for two years and was the first to fill the position by election on the organization of the county in 1846.
According to the resolutions adopted by the Bar association on the memorial of his decease, it is recited, that he was a descendant of the Germans of Palatinate, who, after the Thirty-Year war sought an asylum in America, where they could enjoy freedom of worship, which was denied them in their own home.
I am informed by one who knew him well in life, that he claimed to be a descendant of one of the Hessians, who were brought over to this country by the British to fight against us in the war of the Revolution and that after the capture by Washington his ancestor remained in this country. He was active in the practice of his profession up to within a short time of his decease.
