From its founding in 1795 until the mid-nineteenth century, county departments used different seals. The legislature redefined counties in 1847 and then the present seal was adopted. The colt on the seal depicts the first one known to be born in the county. Early in the eighteenth century, the poor Palatine settlers had walked to Schenectady to grind their grain. A group of them chipped in to buy a mare, and she foaled shortly after being brought back to the valley settlements. |
